This blacksmith-forged blade is just a hair under 11" long and is extremely sharp with a dull point. There is no evidence of this having been sharpened in the last 100-150 years. It's just wicked-sharp like the day it was used in battle. The blade is almost exactly one inch wide. It has some pitting and a couple areas that you might be able to clean (I would leave them just as they are). The guard is almost exactly three inches long and from the handle to the hilt, this knife is 4 and 3/4". The base of the wooden grip is metal and is 3/4" in diameter. The wood has a beautiful and completely untouched look to it. Nowhere is the wood cracked or pitted! There are four or five very small cuts (not quite 1 cm.) in the wood that were clearly made 150 years ago.  Absolutely no monkey business here. The weapon is extremely tight and sound.

On the base or pommel, there is an extremely old, carved inscription of "CSA" and the initials "MB". I'm very good at recognizing doctored carvings and inscriptions. This one is right as rain. If it was done post-war, it was certainly very close to war-time. I'm just allowing for the remote possibility that someone brought this home from the war and then personalized it. In almost all likelihood, the inscription you see is  war-time. The patination of the carving is ancient and, like the rest of the knife and scabbard, untouched.

Please see the pictures and examine them closely. I think you'll be impressed. (For serious inquirees, I will be happy to take additional photos if you deem it necessary.)

The scabbard  (11 and a half inches in length and 1.5" across) might be my favorite thing about this artifact. It fits the blade perfectly and is unquestionably original to the knife. The brass throat and drag are absolutely original to the scabbard. The leather is still quite attractive and there is no crazing at all. Yet it is clear Civil War period - it's just been very well cared for. This is the way I like non-excavated items - with that gorgeous, "fresh from the attic" appearance and splendid eye appeal. Eyes will POP when you bring this out of your safe or hang it on your wall to show your friends. An unquestionably Southern weapon.

This was traded to me by a highly reputable collector who acquired the piece from my dear friend, Larry Hicklen. I have Larry's original letter of authenticity that was sent with it, to my collector-buddy. I'll send that to you, along with the knife and scabbard and my own letter of authenticity.
