US Boxplate from Far-Western Theater - Very Rare to Find
Item #: JMS-560

This cartridge box plate was metal detected near a site that usually only yields a few bullets, an eagle button or two and maybe some knapsack hardware. It was found on private property, with permission, near the 1862 site of Ft. Wingate, in New Mexico. This was the starting point for the shameful "Long Walk of the Navajo" from 1864-1866; it was a forced marched not nearly as brutal as Jackson's "Trail of Tears" but was still carried out against the will of the indigenous people of the area.

During the Civil War, Ft. Wingate (the 1862 site near San Rafael, NM) was also where four companies of the 1st New Mexico Volunteers under Col. Kit Carson were ordered. General Edward Canby called them to the fort in early 1864 to prevent any Navajo uprisings. By this time, Confederate forces had mostly been defeated in the far west after the Union victory at Glorieta Pass. Side Note: From 1881-1885, a toddler by the name of Douglas MacArthur lived at Ft. Wingate while his father, a Captain, was stationed there as a member of the 13th US Infantry.

The box plate is in very good condition with one and three quarters of the original attachment hooks. There is 98% solid lead fill. It may look like there is some lead loss in the photo but there really is not. The whitest areas of the reverse image are the spots where there has been some very minor flaking. The digger has written something in pencil on the reverse. I have not been able to erase it but it is hardly noticeable and does not detract from the piece in any way.

If you're looking for a solid, good-condition plate from the far western theater of the Civil War...or, possibly, from the Indian Wars, look no further.

Standard, Conical Base Union Minie Ball from Western Fort Site!
Item #: JMS-172

*** NOTE *** A number of these sold at the Chicago Civil War Show, so I have only a few left. Order now!

Here we have a .58 caliber Union three-ringer with a twist. It was unearthed near Mesilla, New Mexico where Fort Fillmore was established in the 1850's. The bullet has a grey-lead patina which is common for ones dug in NM and AZ. It is in almost perfect condition with no pushes and maybe one very old, almost imperceptible nick. I have several of these recovered from the same site. If the one pictured sells, I can still send you one just as nice or your money back.

Keep in mind that small purchases (like 1-5 bulllets or a few buttons) can be shipped in padded mailers for a very low, First Class price.

Fort Fillmore was a way station for settlers headed to California. It was home, in the 1850's, to the First and Second Dragoons, 8th Infantry and a Regiment of Mtd. Rifles. Eagle "D" and "R" buttons have been unearthed at the site. Troops conducted operations agains Apache warriors who periodically attacked wagon trains. In the mid-50's, a young officer by the name of George Pickett was stationed at the fort. General Ambrose Burnside was also there temporarily, but as part of a well-drilling project.

When the Civil War broke out, federal forces abandoned the facility after setting it afire. They had previously mounted a failed attack on Confederate forces stations in nearby Mesilla. 500 retreating Union troops were eventually capture by the Confederates. In 1862, Union forces returned to the area and defeated Rebel units who approached them from Santa Fe. The federals closed the fort in 1862 and it was never used by military forces again. An inspection in 1869 found only a cemetery and a few burned-out buildings remaining at the location. The cemetery still stands there today.

Excavated Knapsack Hardware -- A Nice Grouping
Item #: JMS-817

These various brass pieces are in nice condition and were, at one time, attached to soldiers' knapsacks. They were recovered at various spots in or near the site of the 1862 battle of Valverde, New Mexico. I am selling them here as a group but they clearly came off of different knapsacks.

Valverde is where Union forces under General Canby -- including Kit Carson and the First New Mexico Cavalry -- engaged H.H. Sibley's Confederates. The Rebs won the day but sustained pretty severe casualties themselves.

This site was also home to Fort Craig, which was occupied by U.S. forces before, during and after the Civil War.

More Relics from Fort Craig (Valverde), New Mexico
Item #: JMS-818

These three brass bits were probably attached to saddles or some other military leather gear. They were dug at Valverde, New Mexico at the site of Fort Craig. Federal troops were quartered there from the 1840's on up through the 1880's. But the site is best known as the home to the First New Mexico Cavalry under the command of Kit Carson in the Civil War. Carson's troops clashed with Confederates under the command of Henry H. Sibley and were defeated, despite inflicting heavy casualties on Southern forces.

These relics are from a grouping of items dug at Fort Craig some years ago, with permission from the landowner. Please take a look at the other items we have for sale from this historic site.

Dug Saddle Parts from Famed New Mexico Battle Site
Item #: JMS-819

In 1862, Confederate forces clashed with Kit Carson and the First New Mexico Cavalry at Valverde, New Mexico. These little saddle parts were metal-detected there at the site of Fort Craig. The price below is for all three of them. They're in very nice condition and would display quite handsomely with some of the other Valverde relics I am offering.

Valverde and Fort Craig were home to federal forces before, during and after the Civil War.

Trio of Dug Buckles from Valverde, New Mexico
Item #: JMS-820

These look to be buckles that would be attached to saddles, haversacks or possibly some other sort of leather gear. They are in outstanding excavated condition and were recovered on private property, with permission, at the site of Fort Craig in New Mexico. This is where the Civil War battle of Valverde was fought in 1862 and where Kit Carson commanded the First New Mexico Cavalry. The site has given up U.S. military relics from the 1840's and the 1880's and every time period in between. So these could be Mexican War, Civil War or Indian War relics. All I knows is that they are just plain cool.

The price below is for all three.

Great Sword Hanger Dug in New Mexico!
Item #: JMS-884

This cool, little relic could fit accurately in a Civil War or Indian War collection. It was metal-detected on the site of Fort Craig, New Mexico...not far from where the battle of Valverde took place in early 1862. Fort Craig was established in the mid-1850's and remained an active Army outpost until the late 1880's. The site was home to battles with Native Americans and Confederate soldiers at various times. The 1862 skirmish was actually pretty deadly for both sides. The Union and the Confederacy each lost over 200 men killed or wounded. This Confederate victory still failed to dislodge the Union troops in the area, but it did open a clear path for Rebel forces to approach Santa Fe. One particularly cool fact is that Kit Carson commanded the First New Mexican Volunteer Infantry during the battle.

This sword hanger is in outstanding excavated condition. I hope to be posting other relics from this site soon.

Order Information
Please don't bother with the online order form. It doesn't play nice with some browsers and platforms. Order by emailing me at cwartifax@gmail.com or by calling 815-254-0144. Please no calls before 9 a.m. central time or after 8 p.m. central. Leave a message if you get our machine and I will return your call as soon as practicable. I prefer email orders as I am often away from the telephone, but if you're not one who likes to type, give us a ring.

Payment Information
Money orders; Personal Checks are fine. Checks are welcome but require a minimum of 7 business days to clear. (Past customers with a proven track record of reliability have their items shipped before the check clears and usually within 48 hours of receipt, unless I am traveling.) I do accept Pay Pal but an additional charge applies. I'll treat your check like cash.
I have a layaway plan for items over 1000 dollars but be sure you intend to pay in full. Here’s how it works: You put one third down and pay the balance within 60 days. Failure to meet the deadline results in loss of down payment and forfeiture of item. A 90 day "lay awake" plan is available for orders over 5000 dollars.
Warranty Information
All items are 100% GUARANTEED to be authentic to the Civil War or whatever historical period ascribed to them in the description. All items are unrepaired, unless we clearly state there has been a repair in the description. I almost never deal in repaired buttons or plates, but if for some reason, I have one -- you will know it. If for any reason you are unhappy with the item just return it UNALTERED within 30 days for a refund minus shipping charges and, where applicable, commissions. As for Civil War authenticity, your item is not just guaranteed for 30 days. It is guaranteed for life.

If an item is deemed fake (I've not made a mistake on this count yet, but I am human), I expect confirmation from a recognized authority. I can supply you the names of reputable experts if you like. This applies, too, to items that might be deemed post-war.
A further word about "returns" -- I welcome them. In 17 years of doing this online, I've had just two items returned because a customer either was not satisfied or changed his or her mind for whatever reason. That speaks to the truth that I describe everything I sell thoroughly and accurately. But even with photographs, you may see an item differently once you get it. That's why you have 30 days to send it back...no questions asked. I do ask you to remember that dug relics are artifacts that have been in the soil for almost 150 years. So please do me the courtesy of being realistic. That said, YOUR SATISFACTION and MY INTEGRITY are my top priorities.

I do NOT charge a re-stocking fee. If a client abuses this privilege, I reserve the right to do so. But that hasn't been necessary yet!
Shipping Information
Shipping charges: $5.00 via USPS Priority Mail for all orders over $100.00. Heavier or large items will cost more, even via Priority. Small items like individual bullets or inexpensive paper can be mailed first class. That can sometimes be as inexpensively as a dollar! Media Mail is perfect for books and magazines. I will not, under any circumstances, ship via UPS or FedEx. I have just had too many bad experiences with them. In 17 years, I have shipped and received thousands of packages from the good old USPS. Not one has been lost and only one other has been slightly damaged.

If you live in the Greater Chicago area, arrangements can be made for in-person delivery of expensive items or large orders in most circumstances.
Insurance is not required, but strongly recommended on items over 100 dollars. I am not liable for lost or damaged items that are uninsured. My shipping charge to you is what the post office charges me. ABSOLUTELY NO HIDDEN "HANDLING" OR "PACKING" FEES!!! If, because of weight, I miscalculate and overcharge, I will issue a refund or credit -- whichever you prefer!! If I end up paying more than expected, that's just the price of doing business.
Pay Pal and Money order payments are shipped within 48 hours, unless I am out of town. Then, they are shipped as soon as I return. Personal checks are more than welcome but please know they require a minimum of 7 business days to clear (unless we have done business before -- then, I will ship as though your check is cash.) If you use Pay Pal, you will be required to add 3% to your payment. This is to cover costs assessed on me by Pay Pal for all auction and private treaty sales.
