I think there's a chance a careful clean-up will show a lot more gilt than you see here. I don't clean buttons so this is a project for someone. Or, you can leave her just as she came out of the ground. I think the button looks pretty cool as it is.

This is an overcoat-size Union Artillery button with a straight shank and a backmark I cannot make out. I see two rings of dots around it, though. That, the die and button construction and recovery location leave me confident of its status as a definite Civil War button. If you clean this up and find it's not, I will refund your money, pay your shipping and add five bucks to the refund for your trouble. This one is good.

There are no cracks, pushes, dents, pinholes or repairs.

The button was dug up in Fredericksburg, Virginia but it was found on private property, with permission.
