If you want a well-above-average example of an SNY buckle that will stand out across your relic room, look no further.  This one would get a solid "B" on a letter grade scale, in my opinion.  It does have some flaws, entirely on the back. As you can see, the lead is 90% present, with some pebbling.  The hooks are solidly attached and are the correct, and desireable, stud hook style. The flaking and lead loss abated when the buckle was dug...the lead is now as stable as ever. You cannot see it from the front, but the rim of the buckle (on the "S" side") is a teeny bit jagged from ground action.  You really have to feel it to know it's there.

 

The patina on the front is just "knock-your-socks-off" beautiful.  Dirt is in just the right places for definition and there's a fine, woodsy-green look to the rest of the plate.  Best of all, there has been NO REPAIR or restoration of any kind.   

 

 

This SNY was metal-detected on private property, with permission, in Wilmington, North Carolina. This, of course, was part of the Fort Fisher campaign.  There were 8 New York infantry regiments at Fort Fisher and there was one New York Artillery unit in the battle.  I wish I could tell you this buckle came out of a specific regiment's camp, but I just don't have that information. Still, this is a great relic associated with one of the last brutal battles of the war.
