This coat-size Connecticut button is just beautiful! There's a generous helping of original gilt remaining and the button is very solid. Shank is only slightly tilted and the "Scovill" (rmdc) backmark is extremely clear. No cracks, pushes, pinholes or repairs of any kind. This is definitely a grade-A example.
The button was metal-detected, with permission and on private property, near Allatoona Pass, Georgia. According to William Tecumseh Sherman, this small battle was the bloodiest of the war for the numbers involved. At one point, Union soldiers were surrounded and the Confederate commander appealed to General John Corse to surrender, avoiding a "needless effusion of blood". Corse politely replied, thanking the Confederate commander and saying, "we are prepared for the needless effusion of blood whenever it is agreeable to you".
Despite repeated Confederate assaults and bombardment, the Union fortifications were never taken and the C.S. commander was forced to withdraw.
At any rate, that's where this button was excavated. And while the history is cool, the button itself is the key here. And it's an investment-grade relic.
IF YOU WANT TO ORDER AN ITEM…
(or just ask a question about it) please email me directly at cwartifax@aol.com
Using the “Order Information” button right below the price USUALLY works, but not always. I don’t know why, but it could have to do with spam settings on either end. The easiest way to order or inquire about an item is simply to email me directly. Again, my email address is cwartifax@aol.com
Thanks!
