Fantastic, Frameable Reciept From the Fairview Rifles, CSA

Rare, 7" by 8.5" document on gray paper associated with the famous "Fairview Rifles" of Claiborne County, Mississippi.  The Fairview Rifles were folded into the 16th Mississippi Infantry as "Company G", taking part in almost all the major battles of the Army of Northern Virginia. This regiment fought in the 1862 Valley Campaign, blunted McClellan around Richmond and made it to Maryland in time for Antietam. At Fredericksburg, an online article here ----

says the 16th was under heavy artillery fire, but when the shelling stopped, the band played "Dixie". The Yankee regimental band across the way responded with
"Yankee Doodle". Then, according to the article, the northerners struck up a song called "Home, Sweet Home" and the Mississippians joined in.  What a moving moment that must have been!

The 16th was engaged at Chancellorsville, where heavy casualties were incurred, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse (heavy losses -- General Ewell wrote that he had never seen men under "hotter fire"), North Anna, Weldon Railroad (254 killed, wounded or missing out of 480), Petersburg, Hatcher's Run and the final retreat.  This is was one bloodied regiment.  The 16th surrendered with a total of four officers and 68 men.

The document itself is in perfect condition and would frame just magnificently with a nice print of Confederate troops. I especially like the fact that the list of supplies purchased  includes "Six check shirts" --- these, as you probably know, are often referred to as "Confederate battle shirts".  I have a tintype for sale here ---

that clearly shows a "Reb" in his check battle shirt!  These boys left Port Gibson in fine style and most certainly "looked the part" thanks to this particular purchase!

The document is dated May 25th, 1861 and these "Fairview Rifle" boys would see a lot of hard fighting in the horrible years to come. I hope this document find an especially eager and welcoming home.  It certainly deserves it!
