Legal document, 8 x 12.75, Lawrence County, Alabama, detailing the sale of a negro man and woman, dated April 22, 1829.

Front of the document, reads as follows: "Know all men by these presents, That we William Gregory, Harmon Waldrop, and William Gregory, Jr. are held firmly bound unto Richard Jones the sum of nine hundred & seventy two dollars to which payment well and truly be made, we bind ourselves and each of our heirs, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents, sealed with our seals and dated this 22nd day of April 1829...Levied on the following goods and chattels of the above bound (viz)...a negro man about twenty five years of age" and "...a negro woman about fourty five years old," signed at the conclusion by Sheriff John Gregg, Gregory Sr., Gregory Jr. and Waldrop.

Penned on verso: "This Bond was forfeited on the 2nd Monday in July 1829 by the parties...failing to deliver the property...mentioned at the at the time and place appropriated for the sale of said property July 16th 1829," signed by Sheriff Gregg.

There are two vertical mailing folds and one central horizontal fold, two tiny areas of separation where the folds intersect, some irregular trimming along the top and left edges, two small tears where the folds meet the bottom edge, light toning and some mild areas of discoloration, otherwise very good condition.

This document could frame beautifully along with artwork, photographs or other items dealing with the tragic institution of human slavery in the United States. The collector of Alabama history may be particularly interested in researching this remarkable piece of history.
